ARCH1101 Week 2 Progress

This week I have chosen two of the stairs section I have done in the studio session and began developing them in SketchUp. Moreover, I have started modeling another design concept generated from the last studio.

1. Eight Sets of Stairs Concept

Above are the stairs concept I generated during this week's studio.

2. Stairs for Gucci

The idea of this set of stairs mimics the shape of the Gucci building above ground with each steps surface are larger then their respective base. Note that the stairs ascended gently at the beginning while the slope increases as the stairs gets higher, this represents how Gucci's product might look simplistic yet they are extremely difficult to obtain due to its high price. The material for this sets of stairs will be white marble to suit the classy upper-class status of the brand.

This is an image of the staircase inside the designed space with the material added to further showcase the sophisticated notion of the client.

3. Stairs for Revival

The idea for the spiral long yet gentle staircase was design to extend the confronting and overwhelming feeling of the underground space. The gentle and large steps aims to create an endless notion for the user as the workshop is deep underground yet each steps contribute so little in helping the user to get up to the top. Further, the large surface area of the steps are meant to prevent users from taking two stairs up at the same time and forces them to take little steps, which further instigate frustration.

Here is an image of the spiral staircase in SketchUp when installed in the underground space. Note that there is a change in style half-way up to allow user to further experience the void underground.

4. SketchUp Model Progress

Other than the stairs, I have also further developed my 3D model from last week, with a bit more design details and adding the material to create a better representation for my design.

I have added in material texture as well as the first floor studio space for Gucci this week. I have also putted in some structural skeleton frame to give the building a more authentic look, giving it a bit more character.

For Revival's underground space, I have also added in texture, mainly concrete and steel, to further enhance that brutalist architecture feeling that I am going for.

Here is a cross-section of the two workshop. Note the contrast in size between the void under the building above represented the difference in ideologies for the two brand, with Gucci having a classy, noble feeling while Revival is characterized as brutal and shaded.

5. Second Model Concept

Based on the instructions, I have chosen another section I developed in the last studio session and created a 3D SketchUp model.

This concept comes from the word Noble which aims to create a simplistic feeling for the Gucci Studio and the display space.

This is the sketch that I developed in the last studio. The shape of the building is of a simple rectangular glass box with floors floating withing the box.
